Do you have a passion for bringing library service beyond the building? Enjoy working with school groups, Scouts or homeschool families? We are looking for an energetic, creative person to join our awesome Youth Services team as our Youth Outreach Coordinator! This role focuses on taking the library out into the community at events, storytimes and more. From picking Frankenstein's nose at Trunk or Treats to demonstrating elephant toothpaste at STEM fairs, our outreach program has a bit of everything for a variety of ages and abilities!
This is a non-exempt, hourly, non-management position.
POSITION SUMMARY
Establishes and maintains relationships with youth-centered organizations and community groups. Acts as a liaison between New Lenox K-8 schools and the library. Plans both off-site and on-site visits for schools, community groups and other educational organizations. Collaborates with community partners to develop positive relationships, share information on library services, and coordinate jointly sponsored events.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree from accredited institution or LTA Certificate or relevant experience
- Public library experience working with patrons of all ages preferred
- Outreach or children's programming experience preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Strong organizational and scheduling skills
- Familiarity with both fiction and non-fiction literature for a youth collection
- Knowledge of digital services offered
- Familiarity with Illinois and Federal laws as they apply to public libraries including privacy and copyright preferred
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Acts as point person for local K-8 educational institutions and organizations and coordinates both onsite and offsite visits, including tours and Storytimes
- Identifies groups which may benefit from library services and programs; develops strategies for reaching these groups to encourage library use
- Coordinates Library participation in outreach programming at community events
- Collaborates with local organizations to provide remote library services and programs to youth and their families
- Collaborates with the Youth Services Early Literacy Coordinator in planning and presenting preschool and daycare outreach
- Collaborates with the Communications Manager to create marketing materials for community outreach events; demonstrates proficiency utilizing Canva.
- Communicate, partner and engage with Adult & Teen Services in regard to outreach initiatives
- Works with local homeschooling parents to provide programming and library services
- Partners with Resource Coordinator to provide volunteer opportunities and library service to special needs groups
- Participates in collection development, maintenance, and displays per YS Manager guidance
- Public service desk time accounts for approximately 25 percent of scheduled hours
- Provides reference and readers advisory services specializing in children’s literature and pop culture while promoting media literacy
- Organizes and maintains the department’s supplies and storage closets and re-orders materials as needed
- Locates materials and places holds using the library catalog. Searches shelves and carts to locate items for patrons
- Assists and participates in planning and implementation of programs for youth
- Exercises Leadership and provides direction as an emergency PIC(Person in Charge)
REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL EMPLOYEES
- Ensures that library spaces are a clean, safe, and welcoming space for all patrons
- Demonstrates creativity, initiative, and ability to work independently to achieve personal, department, library focused goals
- Comfortable with technology, which may include e-readers, ILS systems, databases, Canva and Google/Microsoft Suites
- Supports Librarywide initiatives, programming and outreach
- Participates in continuing education and training, including bi-annual Staff Days
- Maintains an atmosphere conducive to connecting, creating, and exploring
- Supports onboarding experience for new staff members
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with Staff and Patrons
- Keeps up to date with best practices by researching and attending workshops, trainings and relevant Continued Education opportunities
- Displays high level of confidentiality in regards to sensitive information
- Cross trains in all departments of the Library to serve as a backup for Library Staff
- Access to transportation and ability to travel
